Scary Things

Wrap your head around this statistic: in the 20th century around 45 million were killed during conventional wars and civil wars; however, by contrast state sponsored genocides and murder accounted for nearly 170 million deaths.

What did all of these genocides have in common? A desire to bring about some sort of utopian (idealized) vision of the world in the name of progress. The Age of Reason (17th and 18th centuries) gave birth to the idea of the perfectibility of humankind through education, science and genuine knowledge, etc. giving rise to the myth of Western progress.

The scary thing is I think, increasingly, the 20th century was a dress rehearsal for the 21st…
